Computer Education In Nepal

The history Computer education in Nepal can be traced as early as 1930s, when the Technical Training Institute was established. It was later reformed as current Institute of Engineering in 1972. Since then Nepal has stridden gradually in Technical education. Currently in Nepal there are Six Universities (and three more Universities given permission for establishment) providing education in different disciplines.

The basis of higher level computer education was laid in 1972 when the then Technical Training Institute was reformed as Institute of Engineering under Tribhuvan University. And in 1994, it started the program of Bachelor in Electronics Engineering. Later, in 1998 IOE started Bachelor degree program in Computer Engineering. In addition, Tribhuvan University has also been offering computer related education in various degrees through the Institute of Science and Technology.

Similarly, Kathmandu University launched Computer Science and Engineering program in 1994. Pokhara University established in 1997 has also been offering computer education through the Faculty of Science and Technology. Purbanchal University has been offering computer education in various disciplines since 2000 as well.

It is very difficult for a student to select a computer degree from existing degrees offered by various academic institutions. In many cases students don't even know the objective and scope of the degree. Careful consideration about aptitude, drive and scope of a degree are must before enrolling in any degree. But in most cases, this has been glaringly neglected by Academic Institution and student themselves. We strongly advocate for these things to taken seriously before enrolling in any degree.

On the other hand, an academic course (degree) may provide good insights on various subjects. But theoretical knowledge is of no value if you lack skills to implement that knowledge. Along with the theoretical knowledge students should also have the knowledge of latest tools and technologies being followed in the industry and skills to implement the knowledge.

Computer Industry requires continuous updating and upgrading of our knowledge and skills. Therefore, it is essential to join a professional education center but more important to join one where you will gain exposure, upgrade your knowledge and skill level and be able to implement your knowledge.

With the growth of technological advancements worldwide there has been paradigm shift in business models and the present society has become more reliant on technology. The market dynamics too have changed. You see many organization using computers now-a-days; computer require hardware and software to function and there is continuous development in sophistication in the technology. So, more and job opportunities are being created in IT sectors. The worldwide notion of expanding technology in every part of earth has been duly accepted by Policy makers in Nepal. Thus the government of Nepal has formulated its plan accordingly.

However, there is very low reach of technology in rural parts of Nepal, the reason being lack of IT literacy. Most of the government schools do not have necessary infrastructure to provide IT education. This has indeed created the vast difference in knowledge and aptitude level in students. Those students who get early exposure to IT and computer are likely to grow aptitude and skills in the respective field later on and those who couldn't may not.

Yet, if given proper skill training the difference among the students can be minimized thus the social differentiation and inequality.
